Collaboration with Hyunseo Lee
I really enjoyed working with Hyunseo on this project. We had to divide the work between us and then I went over at her place to document and put everything together.
The main idea is to project some of the human interaction that we can’t really do nowadays due to COVID-19, hence the name “memory box.” Also, the projected videos are in black and white to add some nostalgia.
I struggled a bit with Max 8 to program it to receive data from an Arduino in order to play videos one by one. We programmed the Arduino to send out data when the ultrasonic sensor detects something, so we placed the ultrasonic sensor at the bottom of the 'Memory Box dispenser.'
After a few days of struggling, I finally few helpful resources online, but what really helped was an object called a 'counter' that would act as a delay.

I used a box I had from the golden normal days when it was safe to shop online. Glued an A4 paper on one side of the box and placed the projector and the ultrasonic sensor inside the box facing down in order to detect the users’ hand under the dispenser.
Unfortunately, the placement of the projector wasn’t ideal because it was too close to the wall, and we couldn’t do anything about it because dispensers are supposed to be stuck to walls. I guess a proper solution would be to change the box, get a wider box, glue it to the wall from the side and place the projector in the front. That way it’d be a little bit away from the wall. Also, it was tricky for the box to stay put because the projector was inside and was kind of heavy for the box to stay glued to the wall.
The videos that are being projected are personal collection from Hyunseo's party animal days. But the purpose of these videos is to show some of the basic human interactions that we’re now being deprived from due to the coronavirus.
