The Why?I wanted to tackle the issue of press suppression in an augmented reality application to raise empathy towards journalists and to especially acknowledge the extra struggle, female journalists face. So I thought of creating human silhouettes representing assassinated women journalists telling their stories from the dead. The app is made on Unity using AR foundation, and 3D spatial audio that allows the sound to gradually fade in and out based on how far you are from the character.

What To Expect
When you first open the app, 3 female silhouette figures will appear in your space and detect whether the user is sitting or standing. The figures will be mimicking the user's state when they first launch the app. For example, if the user is sitting, then the figures would sit next to them. Each one will start telling her story when you point your camera at her for ~40s.

The What?
Freedoom of the Press is an augmented reality (AR) app developed by Dina Khalil, designed to address the critical issue of press suppression, with a particular focus on the struggles faced by female journalists. The app uses AR to create an immersive experience, allowing users to engage with human silhouettes representing assassinated women journalists from around the world. Through these virtual figures, the app tells the stories of these journalists, highlighting the dangers they faced in their pursuit of truth and justice.

The app is built using Unity with AR Foundation, and it incorporates 3D spatial audio to enhance the immersive experience. The AR figures are placed in real-world environments, making the stories feel immediate and personal to the user. The app has been recognized for its powerful storytelling and innovative use of technology, winning multiple awards, including a Silver Telly Award and a Distinction in General-Augmented Reality from the Communicator Awards.

Future plans for Freedoom of the Press include expanding the app to feature more stories of journalists and integrating geolocation features, which would allow users to experience these stories in locations relevant to the journalists' lives and work. This project stands as a testament to the power of AR to raise awareness and inspire change by bringing untold stories to life in a deeply engaging way.
